In Korea, comparing two people's Saju has a name of its own: gunghap (궁합). It is traditionally associated with couples, but the same method works for friends, business partners or a parent and child. A gunghap reading does not ask whether two people are "meant to be." It asks how their energies meet: where they naturally support each other, where they spark, and where they will need patience.

Here are the main layers a compatibility reading looks at, from the simplest to the most detailed.

1. The two Day Masters

The starting point is the relationship between the two Day Masters, using the same cycles as the Five Elements. If one person's element feeds the other's, as Water feeds Wood, the relationship often has a nurturing, giving quality. If one element controls the other, as Metal cuts Wood, there can be strong attraction and a sense of challenge, with one partner shaping the other. Two Day Masters of the same element tend to understand each other instantly, sometimes so well that they compete.

None of these is good or bad on its own. Feeding relationships can become one-sided, controlling relationships can be wonderfully motivating, and same-element pairs can be best friends.

2. Element balance: filling each other's gaps

The second layer compares the two element counts. A classic sign of good gunghap is when one person has plenty of what the other lacks, especially the other's favorable element. A chart short of Fire, paired with a partner rich in Fire, may feel warmer and more energized in that company. When both charts lack the same element, readers suggest the pair consciously bring it into their shared life, through where they live, what they do together and the habits they build.

3. Stem combinations

Some pairs of Heavenly Stems are said to combine, or bind together, like magnets. There are five combinations, each producing an element: 甲 with 己 (Earth), 乙 with 庚 (Metal), 丙 with 辛 (Water), 丁 with 壬 (Wood) and 戊 with 癸 (Fire). When one person's Day Master combines with the other's, readers see a natural pull between them, an easy sense of fitting together.

4. Branch harmonies and clashes

The branches, especially the Day branches and the year animals, add the most texture. Readers look for:

  • Six Harmonies (육합): pairs of branches that bond closely: Rat and Ox, Tiger and Pig, Rabbit and Dog, Dragon and Rooster, Snake and Monkey, Horse and Goat.
  • Three Harmonies (삼합): trios of animals four years apart that form one element together: Monkey, Rat and Dragon (Water); Pig, Rabbit and Goat (Wood); Tiger, Horse and Dog (Fire); Snake, Rooster and Ox (Metal). Two members of a trio already share a strong affinity.
  • Clashes (충): pairs of opposite branches six steps apart: Rat and Horse, Ox and Goat, Tiger and Monkey, Rabbit and Rooster, Dragon and Dog, Snake and Pig. A clash brings movement and friction, and with it energy and change.
  • Subtler tensions such as punishments (형), harms (해) and resentments (원진), which point to small, recurring misunderstandings worth talking about.

Reading a compatibility result wisely

A compatibility score is a summary of these layers, not a verdict. Many lasting partnerships include a clash or two, and readers often say a little friction keeps a relationship lively. The most useful part of a gunghap reading is usually not the number but the description: which of your differences are complementary, which are worth a conversation, and what each of you brings that the other lacks.

Cosmic Saju's compatibility reading compares Day Masters, element balance, stem combinations, branch harmonies and clashes, and adds your Western sun signs for a second perspective. Treat it as a conversation starter, something to enjoy and discuss together, and keep the important decisions where they belong: with the two people involved.
