Yin and Yang in Saju: The Polarity Behind Every Element

Yin and Yang split each of the Five Elements in two, decide which way your Great Luck Cycles run and shape how your Day Master expresses itself. Here is how polarity works in a Korean Four Pillars chart.

Most people know the black-and-white circle with a dot of each color inside the other. In Saju, Yin and Yang (음양, eumyang) are not decoration. They are half of the system's grammar: every stem, every branch and every element in your chart is either Yin or Yang, and that polarity changes how the element behaves.

The Five Elements tell you what kind of energy is present. Yin and Yang tell you how that energy moves. Put the two together and you get the ten Heavenly Stems, which is why Saju speaks of "Yang Wood" and "Yin Wood" rather than just Wood.

What Yang and Yin mean

Yang is the sunny side of the hill: active, expanding, initiating, visible. Yin is the shaded side: receptive, concentrating, sustaining, inward. Neither is better. Day needs night, breathing out needs breathing in, and a chart with only one polarity is as unbalanced as one with only one element.

It helps to think of Yin and Yang as two strategies for the same element. Yang Fire is the sun, which lights everything at once without choosing. Yin Fire is the candle, which lights one room, one page, one face. Both are Fire, both are warm, but one radiates and the other focuses.

Yin and Yang Day Masters

Your Day Master is your birth day's stem, so it is always either Yin or Yang. As a rough guide, Yang Day Masters tend to meet life head-on: they act first, prefer straight answers and recover quickly from setbacks. Yin Day Masters tend to read the room first: they adapt, persuade, notice detail and endure quietly.

  • Yang Wood (甲) stands tall and grows straight; Yin Wood (乙) bends, climbs and finds the gap in the fence.
  • Yang Fire (丙) shines on everyone; Yin Fire (丁) illuminates what it chooses to care about.
  • Yang Earth (戊) is the mountain that holds its ground; Yin Earth (己) is the field that feeds others.
  • Yang Metal (庚) is the blade that cuts through; Yin Metal (辛) is the jewel that refines and judges.
  • Yang Water (壬) is the ocean that travels; Yin Water (癸) is the dew that seeps in and nourishes.

Polarity and the Ten Gods

Polarity also decides how other elements relate to you. When an element meets your Day Master with the same polarity, the relationship is direct and forceful; with opposite polarity, it is more balanced and cooperative. That is how five element relationships become the ten relationships known as the Ten Gods. Wealth of the same polarity is the bold, opportunistic kind; wealth of the opposite polarity is the steady, earned kind. Our article on the Ten Gods explains all ten.

Polarity and your Great Luck direction

One of the most practical uses of Yin and Yang is setting the direction of your Great Luck Cycles, the ten-year seasons of life. Traditionally, a chart whose year stem is Yang runs forward through the calendar for a man and backward for a woman; a Yin year stem reverses both. Forward means each decade takes the next month pillar in the sixty-cycle; backward means the previous one.

This is why Cosmic Saju's 100-Year Life Curve asks which option matches how your birth was recorded: the choice sets which way your decades turn. Modern readers debate the gender rule, and some simply look at both directions to see which matches a life more closely, but the underlying idea is the same: polarity decides whether your seasons unfold like spring into summer or autumn into summer.

Finding balance

When you look at your own chart, count how many of the eight characters are Yang and how many Yin. A chart heavy in Yang often belongs to someone with plenty of drive who benefits from learning to pause and listen. A chart heavy in Yin often belongs to someone perceptive and patient who benefits from practicing direct action. Like everything in Saju, the goal is not to become the opposite of who you are, but to borrow a little of what your chart has less of.
