Great Luck Cycles: The Ten-Year Seasons of Your Life

Great Luck Cycles (Daeun) divide a life into ten-year seasons, each ruled by its own pillar. Learn how they are calculated, how to read a decade and how yearly energy fits inside it.

Your birth chart is fixed, but your life clearly is not. Saju handles change through the Great Luck Cycles, called Daeun (대운) in Korean: a sequence of pillars, each lasting ten years, that move through your life like seasons. Each decade adds its own stem and branch to your chart, strengthening some elements and challenging others. Much of what a Saju reader says about timing, when to push, when to consolidate, when a change of direction is likely, comes from reading these cycles.

How the cycles are calculated

Great Luck Cycles start from your month pillar and step through the sixty-cycle one pillar per decade. The direction depends on two things: the polarity of your birth year and your sex as traditionally recorded. A Yang year with a male birth, or a Yin year with a female birth, runs forward through the cycle. The other two combinations run backward.

The age at which your first cycle begins comes from the distance between your birthday and the nearest solar term in the direction of travel. Traditional practice counts the days to the next solar term (running forward) or back to the previous one (running backward) and divides by three: every three days become one year. Someone born nine days before the next solar term, running forward, would begin their first Great Luck Cycle around age three. The years before that are read from the month pillar itself.

Cosmic Saju's life curve asks for this choice explicitly, because it changes the direction of the decades, and it calculates both directions if you want to compare.

Reading a decade

To read a decade, look at its pillar the same way you would look at any pillar in your chart. What are the elements of its stem and branch, and what role do they play relative to your Day Master? A decade of Resource tends to bring learning, support and rest. A decade of Output brings creative expression and visibility. Wealth decades bring practical results and responsibility for resources. Power decades bring structure, pressure and recognition. Companion decades bring independence, peers and sometimes competition.

Then ask whether those elements are favorable for your chart. A gentle Day Master moving through a decade of Resource will usually feel supported; a strong Day Master in the same decade might feel crowded or stalled. The same decade can be golden for one chart and demanding for another.

Finally, look for interactions. A decade whose branch clashes with your Day branch often coincides with movement: relocation, career change or a shift in close relationships. A decade that combines harmoniously with your chart tends to feel smoother.

Years inside decades

Inside each decade, every year has its own pillar, called Seun (세운). The yearly pillar adds a smaller ripple on top of the decade's larger wave. Readers often say the decade sets the climate and the year sets the weather. A difficult year inside a supportive decade is usually manageable; a favorable year inside a demanding decade can be a welcome breather.

Daily fortunes work the same way at a smaller scale: the day's pillar read against your chart. That is how Cosmic Saju's Today's Fortune is generated.

The life curve

Cosmic Saju turns the Great Luck Cycles into a hundred-year curve. Each decade is scored by how its elements relate to your chart's favorable elements, adjusted for clashes and harmonies with your birth pillars, and the yearly pillars add the ripples within each decade. The result is a picture of rising and easing tides across a lifetime, with your strongest decade marked as golden.

Read the curve as a description of conditions, not events. A low stretch does not mean bad things will happen; it means the elements of that season ask more of you, and that rest, learning and patience may serve you better than force. Many people find that their hardest decades, viewed in hindsight, were the ones that built the foundations for their best ones.

Seeing it in real lives

One of the most enjoyable ways to understand Great Luck Cycles is to see them alongside lives you already know. Our celebrity chart articles trace public careers decade by decade, from Elvis Presley's Rabbit decade to the Water decade that arrived in Albert Einstein's chart in 1911. They are not proof of anything, but they show how a Saju reader thinks about timing.
